February 8, 2005

Dear Dr. Iadarola,

I attended the alumni basketball game on Saturday, February 5, 2005 and was disappointed not to see you there so you could explain the reason(s) why you are not going to renew John Dzik's coaching contract. After reading several articles in local newspapers, I was perplexed why the school would choose to eliminate a coach that has brought and continues to bring so much success to its basketball program. I implore you to rethink this poor decision and offer Coach Dzik a contract extension. All of the alumni I spoke with at the basketball game agreed that they will halt all contributions (financial and otherwise) until John Dzik is offered a contract extension from the school. A friend that previously sent a letter to you voicing his disapproval showed me your response to him. I would like further explanation to the following statement, as this suggests Coach Dzik does not represent the qualities listed below.

"Our Athletic Director, Leslie Danehy, is committed to responding to the changing environment of NCAA Division III athletics, emphasizing that rigorous academic programs and participation in sports contributes significantly to the student's overall collegiate experience."

John Dzik definitely made my college experience better and my academics were strengthened because of his guidance. I will reinstate my contributions to my alma mater when one or both of the following two things happen: 1. I get a full and honest reason why John Dzik no longer fits the NCAA academic and culture environment specifically mentioned in your response to my friend. and/or 2. John Dzik is offered an extension to his current contract and an apology is made to him via The Philadelphia Daily News. Until then please discontinue all mailing to my residence and take me off your calling lists.

Sincerely,

Andrew Virtue Class of 2000

Below is the response that was given to my friend. I need more information than what is given in this correspondence.

As you know, John Dzik was instrumental in building Cabrini College's men's basketball into one of the more successful Division III programs. During the past 25 years, he has served as a mentor to many of our student athletes, and the program has earned numerous conferences, district and state titles including eleven post-season tournament bids (seven NCAA and four NAIA.)

After thoughtful consideration, college officials determined that new leadership would align the men's basketball program more closely with the athletic department's strategic agenda for the future. As President, I fully support this decision.

Our Athletic Director, Leslie Danehy, is committed to responding to the changing environment of NCAA Division III athletics, emphasizing that rigorous academic programs and participation in sports contributes significantly to the student's overall collegiate experience.

Thank you for your care and concern for Cabrini College and Coach Dzik. I hope you will continue to lend your support to John as well as to your alma mater.

Sincerely,

Antoinette Iadarola President
